It has been an interesting ride, but once the "catch 'em all" fever wears off Fantasica quickly loses its charm.
As an active player for more than a year I amassed quite a collection of cards, including many limited edition cards from events (even some rare 6-stars). However, I soon found that no amount of 'nice cards' were going to keep me playing any longer.
At its core Fantasica is a collectible card game with tower defense style battles and some minor RPG elements (cards and skills level up). Like any CCG this means players are required to constantly purchase new card packs to stay competitive (power creep + special events). Special Events were frequent, added new cards, and encouraged players to keep grinding (and paying) for prizes.
It wasn't long ago I was spending every spare moment I could grinding for a better rank alongside other hopefuls. Fantasica required an unhealthy amount of grinding (5-8 hrs/day or more) to stay even in the 3-digit ranks. Unlike most other freemiums I've played, spending players still needed to grind heavily despite spending money (often a small fortune).
Overall Fantasica is a fairly unique and enjoyable game, but the heavy focus on event ranks and pay-to-win mechanics makes the experience unpleasant (like a cough drop its sweet on the outside but the inside tastes like... ~_^).
Summary:
- + engaging tower defense battle system
- + overall nice artwork
- • increasing focus on 'fan service'
- • requires lots of grinding to level
- - far too expensive to compete
- - unfriendly to non-hardcore players
