King of Beasts : Mythological Edition (Board Game)

Who knew the king of beasts was decided by committee vote?

King of Beasts is a simple game that involves simultaneously playing cards to vote for the new king of beasts and collecting cards for your own score. When a new king is crowned players earn points for the cards they collected that match the king (2 pts) and runner's up (1pt). The player with the highest score wins.

While the players must rely on luck to govern the cards they are dealt, there is some strategy in keeping track of what your opponents have played. Each player must announce the cards they pick up and the cards they play each turn, so there are no secrets. With this information you can choose to quickly push up the votes of another creature, avoid a creature that is out of cards, or sabotage others by collecting the same creature (stealing points or making it forever short on votes).

There are a limited number of cards available, so players must be careful not to horde too many cards for their own scores or there will not be enough cards left to vote with.

It's not uncommon for beasts to lack votes due to a shortage of cards even in a two player game. Gaming sessions with three or more players will have difficulty accumulating the six votes required to elect the new king. Oddly, the rulebook does not include instructions on ending or scoring a game in which the deck is empty and no creature has the six required votes (you can find it in the Board Game Geek forum).

King of Beasts has little depth and less theme, but it can be an enjoyable light game with the right group. It's simple, easy to learn, quick to play, child friendly, and makes players balance their desire for points and need for votes.

The easy to learn mechanics and quick gameplay make King of Beats a good casual family game without being entirely banal. However, there isn't enough substance to keep the more advanced gamer interested.

Summary:

  • 2-5 players, 20 minutes
  • + easy to learn
  • + family game
  • + gateway game
  • + moral: don't be greedy ( ̄^ ̄οΎ’)\(_ _ ;)
  • + quality components
  • • pasted on theme
  • - overpackaged
  • - not very compelling
